The Certification Readiness Test: 10 Questions to Know If Your IP Can Carry a Credential

Before you build anything, answer these 10 questions.

When people come to us thinking about turning their work into a certification, we don’t start with platforms or badges.

We start with fit.

Because the biggest trap I see is when someone thinks a certification is just a fancier course. It’s not. A certification is proof that you finished something, a public standard, and a longer-term initiative that often includes renewals and community.

Over the years, we’ve identified 10 major questions that predict whether a certification is likely to work for your business (and whether the investment makes sense).

So before you build anything, here’s the readiness test we use:

The 10-question readiness test

Usually, we look at four buckets:

  1. IP
  2. Demand
  3. Business-model fit
  4. Brand readiness

And in practice, you can use the following 10 questions to determine where you currently are on the readiness scale.

1️⃣ Do you have a repeatable IP?
Is your “method” something you can teach through a course, workshop, book, or process, so it can be applied consistently?

2️⃣ Is there a clear market demand for what you do?
Not “it’s interesting,” but a clear pull for the product or service your IP supports.

3️⃣ Are clients asking for higher levels of training?
A signal that the market wants “deeper mastery,” not just an intro.

4️⃣ Do you have an audience list?
Because a credential needs a reachable, committed people to launch to.

5️⃣ Do you have a social following?
Same idea: do you have an existing channel where people already pay attention?

6️⃣ Does your work have enough recognition that people would want to associate with it?
In other words, does affiliating with your brand feel valuable to your audience?

7️⃣ Do you actually want to introduce this into your business stack?
A certification isn’t just a content project - it becomes part of how your business operates.

8️⃣ Does scalable recurring revenue make sense for your model?
Versus relying mostly on one-off course sales or one-on-one work.

9️⃣ Is your brand strong enough to diffuse through other people?
Meaning, are you ready for other individuals and groups to represent your brand moving forward by getting your certification?

🔟 Are you ready to introduce that into the mix?
Brand diffusion changes everything - support, governance, consistency, expectations. Are you ready for that responsibility?

A simple way to interpret your score

If you’re strong on IP + demand, you can build something.

If you’re strong on brand + audience, you can probably launch something.

But if you’re not ready for renewals + community + ongoing engagement, what you’re building may behave more like a course than a certification - and the market will treat it that way.

👉 If you answered “yes” to most of these but hesitated on one, which question is the bottleneck for you right now?

Reply and let me know.

Keep up the good work,
