The one thing I tell every certification leader
If you’re managing a program and it feels like no one “gets it,” this one’s for you.
To kick things off, I want to offer one simple, yet central idea:
Certifications aren’t just about compliance.
They’re one of the most powerful -yet underused- business development tools your clients have.
If you’re scaling or helping a team pursue a certification, and it’s feeling like a burden lately, this post is for you.
Because I’ve seen it happen: the team forgets why we’re taking these additional steps. The story fades. The program starts to stall.
So I want to give you five ways to reframe what a certification really is - and how your clients can use it as a business tool, not just a policy.
1. Structure → it gives them a roadmap.
Big values like sustainability or equity or “healthy workplaces” are great. But they’re also abstract. Certifications take those big ideas and turn them into something their team can act on. Step by step. Credit by credit. They bring shape to the mission.
2. Education → they teach people.
A good framework isn’t just about measuring performance—it’s about building capacity. Helping your client’s team learn what “better” looks like. Whether that’s reducing energy, improving indoor air quality, or making procurement more equitable.
3. Storytelling → they give something to say.
This is the big one. A lot of organizations struggle to talk about what they do in a way that’s specific and credible. But a certification—done right—gives you proof points.
They can say: “We took these steps. Here’s what it means. Here’s why it matters.”
4. Accountability → they hold clients to it.
Third-party review, documentation, recertification—it’s not just red tape. It’s how certifications build trust. Real trust. The kind that your client’s investors, customers, and employees actually pay attention to.
5. Impact → and yeah, they move the needle.
Better performance, better outcomes, better systems. Whether it’s carbon, costs, or credibility, a strong certification makes their business stronger.
I’ve seen orgs forget this. I’ve been in orgs that forget to communicate this.
When the internal story breaks down - when the team forgets the “why” - that’s when things stall. Engagement drops. The standard gets watered down. Marketing gets vague. Product owners get frustrated.
But when the story is strong - when people remember what the certification makes possible? That’s when momentum builds. That’s when the mission clicks. That’s when you start seeing real movement, not just management.
That’s the whole point of this post:
To help you reconnect with what your certification makes possible - so you can run it, grow it, and communicate it with more confidence.
If something I said hit home, or if you’re feeling stuck, reply and let me know.
Seriously. I want to make this newsletter useful, and that starts with hearing from you.
More soon,
Shane
