Want to build a certification that actually matters?
Anyone can slap a badge on a site. But trust? That takes more.
Anyone can slap a badge on a website.
But real certification? That’s about trust. And trust is earned.
In every project I’ve worked on, from LEED to WELL to the new programs we’re helping launch today, the same four credibility levers always show up.
Here are the four credibility levers:
1️⃣ A Clear, Public Standard
No gatekeeping. No mystery. Just visible, auditable expectations.
2️⃣ Transparent Requirements
So anyone (not just insiders) can understand what it takes to pass.
3️⃣ Ongoing Evaluation
Certification shouldn’t be one-and-done. It has to evolve with science, new information, or evolving priorities.
4️⃣ Market Recognition
If no one asks for it, it won’t last. The market has to care.
That’s what separates a certification from a course. It’s what moves it from content… to currency.
If you’re building a certification, these four pillars should show up in every slide deck, every system, every strategy.
I once helped lead a standard that scaled to 100+ countries, and it started by getting these four things right.
So let me ask: 👉 What do you think your market values most in a credential?
Reply and let me know.
Onward,
Shane
